- Fruity, balanced cherry liqueur
An unbreakable bond of Zadar, Maraschino and Maraska dates back to the 16th century, when the first recipes of the Maraschino liqueur emerged. In that period, the Dominican monks used to make an aromatic liqueur known as ros solis, Latin for Sun’s dew.
This liqueur, made from a unique variety of sour cherry, the Marasca cherry, has become renowned for its quality throughout the entire Venetian-ruled area, of which Zadar was a part of at the time. In the late 18th century Zadar had about a dozen distilleries, which were making over 35 various liqueurs, of which Maraschino was the most famous.
The most important among the distillery owners was an Italian merchant Francesco Drioli. He started making Maraschino in a modern industrial way in 1768 when his products found their way to some of the European royal families’ dinner tables.
Drioli is also credited with inventing a special technique of hand-knitting Maraschino bottle sleeves, to prevent damage during transportation. At its peak, in the late 19th century, Zadar liqueur factories exported over 400, 000 bottles and were considered one of the most prestigious liqueur producers in the world. That, together with Maraschino itself, makes Zadar the liqueur capital of the world. The present-day distillery, Maraska, risen from the ashes of the Zadar liqueur industry post-WW2, continues the prominent liqueur tradition of the ancient city of Zadar
About the Producer
The 'Maraschino liqueur' originates from Zadar, on Croatia's Dalmatian coast. Maraska uses the original Maraschino recipe from the 16th century, devised by pharmacists of the Dominican monastery and later re-discovered by Francesco Drioli. After the destruction of Zadar during World War II, Maraska distillery regrew the liqueur's infamy and brought back the region's most famous creation. Deeply set with a tradition in liqueur production, Maraska is a truly quality producer.
